Questions frequently asked by theatres.
SWINGTIME CANTEEN ran for over 300 performances Off Broadway before beginning productions in London and around the USA. Recent productions include regional theatres (Asolo Theatre, Sarasota, FL.; Circle Theatre in the Park, Grand Rapids, MI), Dinner Theatres (Derby Dinner Theatre, Clarksville, IN; Mark Two Dinner Theatre, Orlando, FL) and First Class productions (Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City; in 1998, Denver Center for the Performing Arts).
SWINGTIME CANTEEN features the music of the greatest tunesmiths of the big band era. Each of the 32 songs enjoys a fresh and exciting new orchestration and arrangement. Instruments include: piano, drums, bass, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, guitar and banjo (and an occasional coconut). Songs include a 12-song Andrews Sisters Medley that Time Magazine called, "A wowser!" A cast album is available.
DO ALL THE ACTORS PLAY INSTRUMENTS?
NO! SWINGTIME CANTEEN has been developed to give theatres the greatest flexibility in casting. Of the five roles in the show, only three play an instrument. The script is easily revised to suit the casting pool available. The show utilizes three side musicians who are on stage during the performance dressed as WACs. This allows the theatre to engage professional musicians for instruments not found in their casting pool.
SWINGTIME CANTEEN is designed to be performed on a single unit set by a company of 8 (5 actors and 3 side musicians).
The set is a USO show being performed on the stage of a London music hall in 1944. It features such period iconography as war posters and bandstands.
ANY SIZE STAGE WILL DO! Examples of past productions:
- Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City; 1700 seats, 67 foot proscenium stage.
- Asolo Theatre, Sarasota, FL; 485 seats, 27 foot proscenium stage.
- Derby Dinner Theatre, Clarksville, IN; 565 seats.
- Blue Angel Theatre, NYC; 199 seats. Cabaret seating.
IS IT A REVUE OR BOOK MUSICAL?
BOTH! SWINGTIME CANTEEN's closest theatre cousin is Forever Plaid. Five distinct characters are developed. Each has her own story, aspirations and pay-off by the end of the evening. There is an overall arc to the evening painted in quick brushstrokes so as not to compete with the music which always remains the centerpiece of the evening.
IS THE SHOW INTERACTIVE?
YES, IN A NON-THREATENING WAY. The audience is taken back to another place and time where they become the troops at a canteen show. As such, the cast serves them coffee and donuts during the musical number, Hollywood Canteen; an audience member will find himself on stage as a dance partner of one of the actors during Love Isn't Born, It's Made; and the audience will brave a bomb assault with the cast by joining them in singing Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag.
WHO IS THE AUDIENCE?
To quote an Atlantic City review, "Swingtime Canteen is a solid triumph...bringing in nostalgia buffs for their WWII musical fix, plus a growing surge of Baby Boomers and even a healthy mix of Generation X-ers for a taste of our nation's last age of innocence."
Set in the 1940's and featuring over 30 hits from the big band era, the show is a natural for music lovers. This includes both nostalgia buffs who lived through the era and those who have come to know the era from film and cable TV's American Movie Classics. With a book co-written by Charles Busch (Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Psycho Beach Party), SWINGTIME CANTEEN becomes what Gannet Papers called, "A musical frolic with true camp flavor." This isn't your standard "nostalgia fest". It is a modern, loving parody with fresh and exciting new orchestrations and arrangements of some of the most beautiful music of the century.
EASILY A CHRISTMAS SHOW
SWINGTIME CANTEEN is based on a real event that took place on Christmas Day 1942. On that day Coca-Cola sponsored an 11 hour marathon radio program that broadcast live programming from 43 separate army and navy bases. In the show, the band from the Hollywood Canteen has arrived in London to take part in this broadcast. At holiday-time, a Christmas medley of I'll Be Home for Christmas and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas can be performed.
