'Swingtime Canteen' a treat for greatest generation
January 15, 2009
Actors' Summit closed its 2008 season with the musical revue "Swingtime Canteen." The musical is set in a nightclub in London in 1944 and serves as a tribute to both the armed forces and the entertainers who performed for them. "It's really terrific," said MaryJo Alexander, who directs the show and plays one of the five performers at the nightclub. "The music is delightful to sing." "It was very nice, very enjoyable," said Sandy Danchuk of North Olmsted. She and her husband, Greg, both said they loved the comic "Don't Fence Me In" number. "The second act had quite a wallop," said Greg Danchuk. "It was very strong."

“Swingtime Canteen was a fantastic success! It holds the house record for sales and bottom line! We sold $410,000 and it’s the only time we’ve topped $400,000. So thank you very much for your lovely show. If I can ever give references as to its pleasures and financial potential, feel free to call on me. I just don’t believe every for-profit theatre in the country isn’t doing Swingtime Canteen!”
Paul Hough, Director, American Heartland Theatre, Kansas City, MO

"Swingtime" is true Americana. "Flawless entertainment! A light and heady mix of song and character. Of the numerous revues staged in Missoula the past few years, "Swingtime Canteen" shows off a unique integrity, a powerful professionalism and stellar vocals. "Swingtime Canteen could be watched every night for a week by its happy viewers.

"Swingtime Canteen" is an evocative balancing act of music and comedy, parody and sentiment. They make the good war sound great. [There's an] Andrew's Sisters medley that's a wowser. And they escalate into feeling with I'll Be Seeing You. This gorgeous rendition works as a reminder of what the boys were fighting for, and what any struggle - war in the '40s, AIDS in the '90s - means to the combatants: pain and loss, and a sweet, frail hope. Richard Corliss-Time Magazine
